Joal-Fadiouth Cemetery Senegal

Scroll this

The cemetery island belongs to the twin villages Joal and Fadiouth, situated at Senegal’s Petite Côte. The island is made out of shells and holds mainly catholic graves but there are also Muslim graves to be found here. A mixed cemetery like this is quite rare in the world but reflects the way Christian and Muslim families live together here.

  1. Although Senegalese are proud of this cemetery as a “proof” of Christian & Muslim cooperation & intermingling, I noticed on my visit there (as you can see in these photos here) that on the island cemetery, the Christian crosses are not intermingled with the Islamic markers–they occur in separate regions or parcels.
